Since june 2007, Ben is Full Professor in Modern Dutch Literature, and an instructor in the Department of Literary Studies & Culture at VU University [in Dutch: Vrije Universiteit] Amsterdam. He has published several articles and books on Modern Dutch Literature & Culture. His recent research deals with the function and status of literary representation of scientific, technological and religious knowledge in modern art [literature], and literary history.
In the area of modern media-studies, he contributed a book on knowledge and culture in our digitized age [Peperkamp & Bijker: Geëngageerde Geesteswetenschappen (Den Haag 2002)].
