Faculty Member, Faculty of Arts
About
I am a professor of Language Use and Cognition. My main research interest is metaphor in discourse, about which I direct several research projects, with eight PhD students and one postdoc. My other great hobby is the role of genre in discourse processing.
From September 2006 I have been director of the Language, Cognition, and Communication research program in the Faculty of Arts, which affords a coherent framework for the research of about 40 PhDs, postdocs, and senior staff in Communication and Information Science, English Language and Linguistics, and Computational linguistics.
From September 1, 2010, I have been founding director of the Metaphor Lab, an expertise centre at the Arts Faculty of VU University for interdisciplinary metaphor studies across the humanities and the cognitive and social sciences.
