Thesis Title: Arenberg women in the archducal Netherlands: the development of the Pietas Nobilita
About
In my PhD-research I focus on the development of a particular form of noble piety, the Pietas Nobilita. This form of piety was a direct result of the political crisis which many noble families from the Netherlands experienced due to the Dutch Revolt. In order to efficiently communicate Habsburg loyalty to the new Netherlandish sovereigns, the Archdukes Albert and Isabella (daughter of Philip II of Spain), the nobility had to use the "language" of religion; in this case the severe form of counter reformatory piety that the Habsburgs promoted (Pietas Austriaca). The Pietas Nobilita however had to serve more than one purpose. It communicated also a new and emphasized sense of religion and submission to the holy catholic church. More than this, it communicated a specific dynastic identity, in my case, an Arenberg identity, which focussed around ideas of noble genealogy and family history.
